A couple weeks ago I attended the Slush Motorsports event at Pikes Peak International Raceway basically as a marketing day and a fun open lapping day. The event ran Friday into Saturday evening and there were thousands of spectators for both days.
The event catered to car enthusiasts of all types, from drifting and drag racing to car shows and 2 step, this had is all. I was out in support of a new sponsor, Colorado Tire and Auto care here in Pueblo, CO as well as representing the gun store. I ran in several hot lap sessions Friday and Saturday putting in about 125 laps total. The hot lap sessions turned into almost a wheel to wheel race day with 30 cars on the track at any given time. Most of the drivers were, as expected, novice drivers but were generally very safe with a few exceptions.
One interesting observation, this was a young persons event, I think DeeAnn and I were the oldest people in attendance and I’m pretty sure I was the oldest driver out there!
Most of my hot lap sessions were spent practicing patience and passing as well as troubleshooting a suspension issue I have been fighting. One of the photographers out at the event caught a great video of what the car was doing and as a result, I replaced my coil overs and worked a lot on damping and tire pressures the following week at Pueblo Motorsports park. (video below!)
At the end of Saturdays session, I ran into Dan Williams (Regional Director for NASA Rocky Mountain and a really great driver) who paid me a HUGE compliment after I jokingly asked him if I was ready for my competition license, his reply shocked me a bit. “Yes! I was watching , there was you and everybody else, I’m proud of you” .. Well for me, that was like my father giving me an atta boy. and a bit more confidence as I work on improving myself.
Long and short, it was a great event, a lot of fun and pretty cool watching the other drivers throw cars around!
